Chinese imports are again in midst of a storm as FDA is in the process of imposing a new import alert which has widened the restrictions on the food ingredients imported from country. Now border inspectors have been authorized to detain food stuff coming from China which could be anything ranging from noodles to cornflakes. A number of companies are set to suffer as these restrictions would cause delay in delivery of these goods which are used as raw materials for a number of products.
This decision reflects the problems which FDA has with China’s manufacturing control issues and unable to figure out which controls are in place for preventing food contamination. FDA fears that these items may contain melamine which can lead to contamination. These kinds of import alerts are rarely issued. Now the Chinese manufacturers have a tough task of proving that their products are safe enough and they don’t contain any contamination.
